The Essence of Life, Reflected in the Space
Welcome to the official website of the JSPS Transformative Research Area (A) theme: "Life in Spece".
As the retirement of the International Space Station (ISS), scheduled for 2030, aproaches, life science research in low Earth orbit is reaching a major turning point. It now represents the culmination of humanity's achievements in space biology — and at the same time, a major step forward toward the post-ISS era, deep-space human exploration, and eventual settlement on Mars.
In this research area, we are building upon the valuable insights gained from experiments conducted aboard Japan's Kibo module on the ISS. Our goal is to explore what it truly means for humans to live in space, while also gaining new perspectives on the nature of life itself — evolved over billions of years on this one-of-a-kind planet we call Earth.
We invite you to join us on this exciting journey into the future of life and space.

Collaborations and Affiliated Studies
This research project is supported by a collaborative network that has grown not only through selected space experiment themes by JAXA, but also through the participation of the omics sub-group from the preceding project Living in Space in the NASA GeneLab Open Science Data Repository (OSDR) Analysis Working Group (AWG).
If you are interested in this research theme, we warmly encourage you to consider joining the AWG sub-group Space, Adaptation and Evolution.
